Action research in reading instruction is a collaborative and iterative approach that brings together various stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students, to bridge the gap between theory and practice. By actively involving these stakeholders, action research aims to develop effective methods that address challenges, improve literacy skills, and create meaningful learning experiences. This approach recognizes the importance of combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the complex factors influencing reading instruction. Studies in the field of reading instruction have explored a range of strategies, interventions, and factors that contribute to successful literacy development. For example, investigations into parental involvement and reading habits have emphasized their significant impact on children’s reading abilities and academic performance. These studies underscore the importance of creating a supportive home environment that fosters a love for reading and provides access to reading materials.
Furthermore, action research emphasizes the practical application of findings in real-world contexts. It seeks to generate evidence-based practices that can be implemented in classrooms to enhance reading instruction. This involves designing interventions, innovations, and strategies tailored to the specific needs of learners. By continuously evaluating and refining these approaches through iterative planning, action, reflection, and refinement cycles, action researchers can contribute to ongoing improvements in reading instruction. Drawing from these, the study aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the reading competencies of non-reader learners in the district of Del Gallego, division of Camarines Sur. The participants of the study were 25 non-reader learners in Grades IV, V, and VI. The study employed a descriptive method by utilizing PhilIRI Post test and a survey questionnaire to address research questions related to reading comprehension levels, associated factors, the effectiveness of interventions, and the effects of using intervention materials and strategies. Thus, Phil-IRI assessment test was used to determine the number of non-readers to be included in the study and was also used to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of the intervention.
